A tiny whole kina sea urchin shell pendant necklace - a tribute to transformation and the uncommon beauty found beneath the surface.

Because hidden beneath the prickly spikes of kina sea urchins lies beauty. A stunning dotted pattern on their surface is revealed only when they shed their sharp defenses.

I've collected a handful of these shells either through beachcombing (or through a diver friend who goes diving for this seafood delicacy).

I've hand-sculpted its back with a clay putty mixture of New Zealand beach sand and crushed kina spikes. Its hollow centre is capped with a cubic zirconia stone. Hangs on a fine cable sterling silver chain necklace.

Did you know kina are considered invasive in New Zealand waters? These sea urchins can wreak havoc on our delicate marine ecosystems, especially kelp and seaweed forests. The kina shells I use are sustainably collected—either found washed up on the beach or gathered by a diver friend. While I may not be single-handedly restoring underwater forests, this small step ensures that these beautiful shells are repurposed in a way that’s mindful of our environment.

Our jewellery-making process is an artful fusion of organic nature and the electroforming technique, inspired by the wabi-sabi philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection. Unlike traditional cast pieces, our pieces capture the raw essence of nature itself. These charming quirks & irregularities from both element & the process enhance the authenticity and rustic character of each piece, making it one-of-a-kind. Remember that these treasures are delicate.

They turn up on the beach with specific combinations of tide and wind alongside the Janthena Janthena purple snail shells . If you ever make a pendant of the Janthenas I’ll have one of those too !!!
