There's a Situation on My Workbench

There is a situation on my workbench and I'm not sure how to explain it.

It started as an idea for one piece. Then I saw a shell that reminded me of something else. Then I found a fragment of pāua I'd been saving. Then I pulled out some wire I'd been meaning to use for months.

And now there are about seven half-formed things lined up on the bench, each one waiting for me to come back to it.

This is actually how most of my pieces get made. Not in a straight line. Not from sketch to finished product in a logical sequence. More like several conversations happening at once, and I keep dipping in and out of each one until they're all resolved.

Some jewellers are very organised. Methodical. One piece at a time.

I am not that jeweller.

But the chaos produces good things. Usually. Eventually.

Watch this space.

With sandy hands and a salty heart,
Rina
